How to care for your Pot Grown Tree 🎄

We sell both freshly cut real Christmas trees and Pot Grown trees here at The Sussex Christmas Barn.

We frequently get asked about caring for pot grown trees. So much so, that Ruth has written a short blog article here on how to care for your Pot Grown Christmas Tree.

Pot Grown Trees are planted in their pots and are established in their pots in the ground. However Potted trees are grown in the soil and dug up before being potted.

The advantage of "pot grown trees" over "potted trees" are as follows:-

1. Most roots are contained within the pot after lifting 2. The fibrous feeder roots are not damaged 3. The structural root remains intact.

Pot grown trees therefore have little or no root damage.

Caring for your Pot Grown tree:- A pot grown tree is a living product so should be watered perhaps weekly, not too much water, just enough to keep the soil from drying out. Best advice for longevity would be to ensure the tree is de-climatized when it is removed from the house. This is because the soil will have warmed up during its time indoors, so it will need to cool down again slowly, perhaps putting in the garage or shed until spring time. Sudden changes will shock the tree roots and could lead to mortality.

The trees are grown in their pots so the pot will soon become too small to sustain a large tree. It is advisable to plant into the ground or pot on to a pot at least 2 litres bigger each year. This will allow some unrestricted root growth. Potting should always take place when the tree is fully dormant between Nov and Feb. Whilst we wait for our own trees to mature, we purchase from Infinity Christmas Trees, who have some more information here.

Remember that our Pot Grown trees are in stock from 29 October and real freshly cut Christmas trees from 19 November!
